Windy City RibFest in Uptown

Windy City RibFest in Uptown

Date: Friday to Sunday, July 16-18, 2010
Time: Friday - 5pm to 10pm | Saturday & Sunday - Noon to 10pm
Location: Lawrence & Broadway | Chicago
The best local and national ribbers will mix it up with three days of classic and hot music acts at this second annual festival that's fast becoming an iconic summer event. It also features arts, crafts and other vendors.

At its debut in 2009, rib vendors included many of the most acclaimed in the Midwest and a stellar music lineup including reggae legends The Wailers, New Orleans rockers Cowboy Mouth and acclaimed local indie acts Tom Schraeder and Scott Lucas.

This year's stage performers include acclaimed alt-rockers Tonic and Sister Hazel, Chicago blues jam band Cornmeal, lauded Chicago chamber popsters Canasta, and acoustic pop rockers Stellar Road.

A $5 suggested daily donation benefits the Business Partners, The Chamber for Uptown.

Friday's Headliner: Tonic
Six Top 10 singles. More than four million records sold. Grammy nominations, platinum albums, numerous awards and hit songs around the world, plus the #1 most-played rock song of 1998. Tonic is a musical powerhouse, merging the raw honesty of rock to unabashed melody. Many bands would be content with that sort of history. Not Tonic. The band is back in the studio after a two-year break, working on a follow up to their last album, Grammy-nominated "Head On Straight."

Writing songs for their album -- scheduled for a fall 2010 release -- and planning a summer tour including dates with the Gin Blossoms (the Gin & Tonic Tour, naturally), the band is hitting their stride and energized by what the future holds.

Saturday's Headliner: Sister Hazel
It's been 10 years and over two million records sold for Sister Hazel since the group's five distinct personalities came together in the vibrant Florida college town of Gainesville. Sister Hazel worked out of the area in concentric circles, quickly establishing a reputation as one of the strongest, most consistent draws of the grassroots circuit. .

The group prides itself on being accessible and down-to-earth, and devoting time to events and organizations in which they strongly believe. This includes Lyrics For Life, which sponsors charitable events to raise money for and awareness of cancer research, and the annual Rock Boat, a fan-driven Caribbean mingling featuring multiple artists. The band's seventh album of original material, Release, came out in August 2009 and has done very well on the music charts.

Sunday's Headliner: Cornmeal
Formed over 10 years ago, Cornmeal has grown from humble beginnings into a nationally recognized live music institution. Ten years together is no simple task these days, especially when the last five have seen the band spending over half the year on the road. Heavily influenced by American roots and folk music, Cornmeal blends lightning fast tempos and impeccable harmonies into an unrivaled live performance that continues to expand upon the five-piece acoustic-electric group's vast musical repertoire.

In early 2010, Cornmeal released their first live album, "Live in Chicago, IL Vol. I," an album that pays tribute to the fans. For the first six years, Cornmeal performed every Wednesday in Chicago to small yet loyal crowds. The album was recorded live during the winter of 2009 at Martyrs on Lincoln Avenue. Unlike Cornmeal's three previous albums, Live in Chicago captures the band in its raw, intense format, bouncing through song after song of fast-paced, fierce originals and extensive improvised jams.
